"One Big Happy Family"

The original, starring Jack Lord and James MacArthur, still going strong after almost 50 years.

Watched this one tonight again and it wins the award for by far the most repulsive killers of the entire series when you realize that ultimately you're looking at a group of people who have committed a number of murders on a scale unmatched by any in the 12 year run. McGarrett's bewilderment and revulsion at the end speaks for the conscience of the audience. And the atmospheric touches, especially in Morton Stevens' score helps sell the idea that yes, you can believe the Fergusons have that long a bloody trail behind them. It's one time where a viewer might regret Hawaii's lack of a death penalty (though it's certainly likely we'd see an extradition back to a mainland state with a death penalty where they committed a previous murder)

What is particularly creepy about this show is that it was likely based on a true story:

I've never placed One Big Happy Family in my Top 20 Classic HFO episodes but it definitely is a Classic. Maybe, it's because they kill for the heck of it. I do enjoy the family affair of the criminality though. These victims never knew what hit them. That was an excellent sketch of the blond killer Jed I think his name was. That sealed the family's fate.

I think I already mentioned on another post but that sketch turns up in other episodes over the next season or two. You see it on police station bulletin boards etc in the background. I guess the prop man liked it.
