Posted : Fri, 17 May 96 23:33:13 -0800 Org. : MIND LINK! - British Columbia, Canada I wangled a couple of tickets to the XF season finale party here in Vancouver and this is my report! The party took place in the Elephant on Campus pub at BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) in Burnaby from approximately 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. Many of the 200 or so people present had won contest tickets either through the Vancouver Province or from radio station Z95.3. There were several actors from the show there -- all three Lone Gunmen, Mrs. Mulder, Agent Pendrell and Cancer Man. Lone Gunman Dean Haglund entertained the crowd before the show improvising with a woman standing behind him and putting her arms through his lab coat. He played the part of an scientist explaining the truth behind aliens kidnapping women (a stock science fiction plot) while the woman attempted with her arms to react to the various things that he was saying. William Davis (Cancer Man) then appeared, saying "Gee, it's smoky in here." Referring to last season's finale, he said, "Fox Mulder >needed< to be in that box car." As he left the stage he was almost hit by a camera which was recording the scene! We then watched the show on a large-screen projection TV with several normal TV sets scattered around the outer reaches of the pub. During the commercial breaks various XF-related prizes were given away (my daughter won a T-shirt and a video, ironic since I had already bought all three ";-). After each commercial break the audience came out with a big "Shhhhh..." and at the end of the show there were screams of anguish... Following the show, the grand prize for the evening was awarded, consisting of yet more XF merchandise and a trip to the XF set guided by Cancer Man himself. When CM appeared after the show, he told the audience "You'll like being colonized ... you will be happy ... put your faith in me and withdraw it from Mulder." Davis spoke of his acting career. He said he was a radio actor in Toronto at age 11 in 1949. Following this he was an actor and director for about 20 years in England. He has appeared in lots of Vancouver productions. In Look Who's Talking he played a "good guy"! A woman asked him about the cigarettes he smoked. She apparently had won a package of Cancer Man's favorite brand as a prize. Davis told her that she might be surprised what was in them! He said that the herbal cigarettes he smokes smell like grass. He suggested that smoking two and a half packs of them every day for 25 years would probably be just as bad as normal cigarettes. CM described his relationship with Mr. X (the two were seen together for the first time in a recent episode) as "a bit of a problem." He said he has "trouble getting good help", citing the example of the guy who tried to knock off Skinner shooting him point blank in the stomach and trying to blow up Rat Boy, failing in both cases. Davis said for his role in this season's final episode, he had to study Dostoevsky's The Grand Inquisitor, which tells about God coming back to earth and being confronted by a cardinal who says this isn't a good idea, because "this will ruin everything". When quizzed about CM's love interests, Davis pointed at Mrs. Mulder, saying "Rebecca..." He then added, "Mr. Mulder wasn't good at everything ... so we have some hints from the past ... a love interest can be useful if it serves the 'greater cause'." Davis closed by saying, "Mulder is a very dangerous person. He will expose things you will not be able to handle ... it will be much better to be colonized!" By the way, the menu at the pub consisted of such items as Mulder's Fish 'n Chips, Potato Skinners, Scully Burger, CIA Lasagna, and Basic Alien Pizza. ANOTHER REPORT: Subject : Season finale party in Vancouver w/Cancer Man From : jgee@direct.ca Date : 1996/05/18 Org. : Canada Internet Direct, Inc. Group : alt.tv.x-Files Wow that was fun! A lucky few of us got to attend a season finale party thrown by a local tv station & newspaper. I'm not sure how many people were there but maybe 100-200 people? In attendance to watch the season finale with us were William B. Davis (Cancer Man), Mulder's Mother (forgot her name), all three Lone Gunman (Tom Braidwood, Bruce Harwood, and Dean Haglund) and Agent Pendrell (don't know his name, lab guy who likes Scully). The evening started with some entertainment from Dean Haglund. DH was a riot! He works at an improv club here in Vancouver I think. He put on a hilarious bit for us and we were all laughing til it hurt. Cancer Man spoke briefly and then we watched the season finale. They were giving out door prizes at every break, before the show started, during commercials, and after the show. The grand prize was a day on the set with CM. It was really cool to watch the show with CM and Mulder's Mom just 15 feet away. Every time it went to commercial everyone started talking or looking to CM to see if he has any reaction. At the end of the episode CM came on stage and spoke a bit and answered questions. One person asked him if CM would have any love interests on the show. He looked over to Mulder's Mom and called her name (don't remember what it was, sorry) , while smiling a big grin. My friend asked if he really was cured of cancer. CM said yes he was cured, that was the trade. His cure for the freedom of the Gentle Man (Jeremiah Smith?). He's a nice guy and when he first came on stage he said (paraphrasing) 'Whew! It's smoky in here.' and waved his hands around to clear the smoke. That was before the episode, after the show he came up and said 'You'll like the colonization....' and some other stuff about being assimilated? He didn't use that word but I couldn't remember exactly what he said. After that we had an autograph session. They sat in a line starting with CM, Mulder's Mom, Dean Haglund, Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood and then Agent Pendrell. I waited til the line died down and then got in line. I sat down next to CM and had a friend take a picture. I asked CM if he was going to 'switch sides' next year since he would probably get in a little trouble for releasing the Gentle Man. He smiled and said that it's been suggested a couple of times. He said we'll see that he will prevail in the end. I also mentioned that maybe Mr. X was vying for his position. He smiled again and said 'You think so? Maybe!' My friend asked him if he was Mulder's real father. He didn't say anything, just smiled. Mulder's Mom next to him said 'That's a good question!' I moved down the line and when I was next to Tom B. and Agent Pendrell I asked both of them if either would get a date with Scully next season. TB said 'It's a wait and see kind of thing.' while Agent Pendrell said 'I hope I do before he does!' I got everyone to sign my menu. The party was held in the pub of one of our local colleges. On each table was a menu of some special food items we could order to snack on. The menu consisted of Mulder's Fish n' Chips, Potato Skinners, Scully Burger, CIA Lasagna and Basic Alien Pizza. Mulder's Mom signed it 'from Mom Mulder aka ...?' (Sorry can't read it). Dean Haglund wrote 'Gunmen Rule!' Tom Braidwood wrote 'Gunman Forever.' and Agent Pendrell drew a heart with 'Pendrell + Scully' in the middle of it. NEAT!
